Welcome letter

Welcome letter on behalf of the Secretary-General of the 3rd edition of Sofia International Model United Nations - 24-31 July 2010 - Mr. Hans Lenders and the President of the European Union at SOFIMUN 2010 - Ms. Georgiana Ungureanu

Dear friends,

It is a great honour for us to invite you to the capital of Bulgaria for the 3rd edition of Sofia International Model United Nations. We are dedicated to extend the outstanding reputation of SOFIMUN as an international Model United Nations conference that provides you with an invaluable experience and lifelong memories!

Through the past editions SOFIMUN has built the foundation of an event that gathers bright young students from all over the world to discuss a wide variety of issues that affect the lives of people around the globe today and in the years to come. SOFIMUN will be held from the 24-30th of July 2010 and comes with an innovative structure, where delegates are given the opportunity to experience the decision-making process in the United Nations as well in the European Union.

As a participant in SOFIMUN you will take up the role of a diplomat or NGO representative to defend the interests of your assigned countries/organisations in the best possible manner. We challenge you to think outside the box and look for the manoeuvring space within your respective position as it is beyond doubt that through an open view to new and different perspectives we will be able to overcome the 21st century’s challenges.

SOFIMUN will offer you, among many other things, a glimpse into the world of international diplomacy both within the United Nations and the European Union. It is a way to directly experience the challenges that come with addressing global problems, to put your public speaking skills to the test or to enhance your debating and lobbying qualities. Most importantly however, you can meet new inspiring people from all over the world and listen to their stories while having a genuine good time together.

We therefore welcome you, irrespective of your field of study, to take the opportunity and participate in the 3rd edition of SOFIMUN!

Mr. Hans Lenders

Secretary-General of SOFIMUN 2010

Ms. Georgiana Ungureanu

President of the European Union at SOFIMUN 2010

UN Parliamentary Assembly - international campaign

United Nations Parliamentary Assembly (UNPA)

The SOFIMUN Foundation is proud to inform you that it is working forward on supporting and helping the international campaign for the establishment of a United Nations Parliamentary Assembly (UNPA). The SOFIMUN is the 1st MUN event in the world and the 1st organization in Bulgaria contributing to the idea. The campaign will be presented also to the participants during the SOFIMUN 2010 conference in Sofia, Bulgaria. The SOFIMUN Foundation is organizing initiatives in Bulgaria in order to find support for the idea to establish the first direct public representation in the United Nations Organization.

About the Campaign

The Campaign for the Establishment of a United Nations Parliamentary Assembly (UNPA) is a global network of parliamentarians and non-governmental organizations advocating citizen's representation at the United Nations.

The Campaign's participants are united in their support of the Appeal for the Establishment of a Parliamentary Assembly at the United Nations. The list of initial signatories to the appeal has been made public in April and May 2007 during the launch of the campaign at more than one dozen events on five continents. The call for a UNPA now is supported by 642 members of parliament, further 2136 individuals from 132 countries and 173 NGOs on all continents. The first international conference was convened in November 2007 in the Palais des Nations in Geneva under the patronage of former UN Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali.

The Campaign's Secretariat is led by the Committee for a Democratic United Nations. The work of the Campaign is guided by an informal Steering Committee, which helps to define the Campaign's goals, policies and strategies.

About the UNPA proposal

A United Nations Parliamentary Assembly (UNPA) would be the first parliamentary body directly representing the world's citizens in the United Nations. It is envisaged as first practical step towards the long-term goal of a world parliament.
